Hayward is losing a Safeway grocery store.

The company said its Jackson Street location will close in late February 2026.

"We have been proud to serve the Jackson Triangle neighborhood over the years, and this decision was not made lightly," Safeway said in a statement. "With our lease term ending, we have carefully considered our options and decided to shift our strategy."

Workers at the Jackson Street location will be assigned to another store in the area, Safeway said.

The only other Safeway in Hayward, located at 22280 Foothill Blvd., will remain open.
