Muslim chaplain takes life at troubled New York prison where guards fatally beat inmate

A Muslim chaplain employed by the state prisons system fatally shot himself early Friday in the same facility where inmate Robert Brooks was beaten to death by correction officers in December 2024.

The civilian employee walked into the administrative offices at Marcy Correctional Facility , located about 240 miles north of the city, pulled out a firearm he had brought inside and pulled the trigger, officials said.

The man was identified as Imam Abdallah Hadian, 55, of Syracuse, the New York state police confirmed. His suicide was first reported by The Free Lance News website.

Prison staff attempted to revive him and medics and police were called, but Hadian died at the scene, officials said.
