The Jets traded cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday in a deal that reshaped the franchise’s future. But the announcement was delayed at the request of Jets general manager Darren Mougey , who needed to attend a funeral.

According to Sports Illustrated senior NFL writer Albert Breer , the Colts initially inquired about Gardner in mid-October. They used what the Dallas Cowboys received in a trade with the Green Bay Packers (two first-round picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark) as a framework for negotiations. Before the deal was announced, Mougey asked Colts general manager Chris Ballard for an important favor, which Ballard granted.
