DENVER (KDVR) -- Colorado Parks and Wildlife confirmed Friday that it received a "mortality alert" for a female gray wolf known as 2506 on Oct. 30.

CPW said it has confirmed that the death took place in southwest Colorado and that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating, due to the gray wolf being federally listed under the Endangered Species Act.

Wolf 2506 was among a group of wolves relocated to Colorado from British Columbia this January, according to CPW.

A final determination of the cause of death will not be made until the investigation is completed, including a necropsy, according to CPW, which called the necropsy a "foundational component of the overall investigation process."
