TEMPE, Ariz. — A 20-year veteran with Tempe Fire Medical Rescue died Friday morning after an ongoing battle with Glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer, according to the city's fire department.
John Garza, whose last assignment was on Engine 273 at Station 3, died at the age of 52.
In Garza's role as a paramedic, he reportedly helped thousands of people with medical emergencies, saving countless lives.
During Garza's career, he became experienced in many aspects of fire service. He was a captain, engineer and more.
Tempe Fire said he was a United States Marine Corps veteran.
City of Tempe officials honored Garza on Friday for his service to the city and his compassion.
He is survived by his wife, Liana Garza, and two children, Johnny and Maya.
