PHOENIX — A firefighter and paramedic who dedicated 20 years to the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department died Friday morning after a battle with occupational cancer.

John Garza, who was 52, helped thousands of people in life-threatening medical emergencies, according to an announcement from the city of Tempe.

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Garza served various roles within the Tempe Fire Department during his tenure, from captain to engineer.

“Firefighters risk themselves to provide lifesaving services to our community every day,” Tempe Mayor Corey Woods said in the announcement. “On behalf of the entire city of Tempe, I would like to express sincere condolences to Fire Paramedic John Garza’s family and thank them for the service he provided.”
