HANALEI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Kauai Fire Department and the Ocean Safety Bureau provided an update Friday after an off-duty lifeguard suffered a shark bite injury.
Chance Swanson, 33, was bitten around 3 p.m. Wednesday near the Pine Trees surf break.
OSB said on-duty lifeguards at Hanalei Bay retrieved Swanson on his surfboard using a rescue ski.
Then, they applied a tourniquet while still in the water before loading him onto the ski and bringing him to shore, said officials.
Lifeguards continued to administer first aid until paramedics arrived.
OSB Chief Kalani Vierra commended the lifeguards’ “quick thinking and decisive actions,” saying their “professionalism and teamwork saved his life.”
Swanson had suffered injuries to his legs and was taken to Wilcox Medical Center.
