BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- California has 52 members of Congress -- 43 democrats and nine republicans, along with two Democratic senators. But after Tuesday's special election, the number of republicans that make up that California coalition could go from nine to four.
"There were about five seats that were very impacted by Prop 50. Of those five seats, I would say with some degree of confidence, two or three of them would have probably gone Democratic this cycle anyway," said Central Valley political analyst Tal Eslick. "It's very common for the president in office -- to his party -- to give back seats outside of presidential election."
The newly-adopted map after the passing of Proposition 50 will last until 2030.
