HMP Addiewell has become one of Scotland's most violent and dangerous prisons, a shocking new report has suggested.

The privately-run West Lothian jail had more cases of prisoner self-harm and assault last year than any of the country's other 14 prisons.

According to Scottish Prison Service (SPS) figures obtained by the Daily Record under Freedom of Information, the 234 self-harming incidents at Addiewell in the 12 months to March 2025 made up almost one in four of all 1,047 incidents across Scottish prisons.

The total was more than that of Barlinnie in Glasgow and HMP Edinburgh combined, despite both facilities housing more prisoners.

HMP Kilmarnock, which was previously privately-run, had the second-highest figure, with 138 incidents.
