Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday her intent to retire from Congress in 2027 after serving 20 terms. The announcement came on the heels of a Democratic Party surge on Tuesday in New York City, New Jersey, Virginia and California in off-year elections.

Ms. Pelosi stepped down from her House Democratic leadership role in January 2023, after Republicans won the majority in the 2022 midterm elections. She was a deadweight, not a boon to Democrats.
