Woolwich council needs to tighten its belt and provide better stewardship of taxpayers’ money, residents say.

“It feels like Woolwich isn’t handling our funds well when we land where we have been for the last several years, and we can’t continue, quite frankly, with these ridiculous tax increases,” said John Dixon.

Dixon spoke earlier this week as a public delegation prior to a council budget discussion. He noted that taxpayers aren’t receiving wage increases at the same rate as taxes are rising.

A motion by Coun. Evan Burgess aimed to direct the mayor to limit next year’s hike to the rate of inflation, recognizing local tax increases of more than eight per cent in 2023 and 2024, and 10 per cent in 2025. The latest increase adds about $116 to the township portion of the average property
