A 21-year-old aspiring medical student, Mohammad Aan of Rampur, died by suicide in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, after staying just four days at a hostel in the Rawatpur area for his preparation for the NEET exam.

According to police, Aan’s roommate asked him to go for prayers on Friday afternoon; when he returned later, he found the room locked from the inside. After calls went unanswered, authorities forced the door open and discovered him hanging from the ceiling fan.

A suicide note recovered by police reportedly expressed remorse to his parents, with a message saying: “Mom, Dad—Forgive me."
