PORTAGE LAKE, Maine (WABI) - The Maine Attorney General’s Office has ruled law enforcement was justified when they shot and killed a man in Aroostook County in February after he shot and killed a police K-9.
State Police K9 Preacher died the following day.
The incident happened on February 3rd when officers were called to Ranger Street in Portage Lake for a domestic dispute involving a woman and 29-year-old Steven Righini.
Officers attempted to take Righini into custody, but police say he resisted, allegedly pulling a firearm from his waistband and firing at officers while retreating inside.
Police say Righini later attempted to leave in a vehicle and fired a shot at the State K-9 unit. They tell us he also pointed a gun at officers.
