PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - Throughout the year Resource and Families Specialist Sarah Hatt, does many events from backpack drives to family fun days. But as Halloween decorations come down and Christmas lights go up, she’s reminded of what it means to open your heart and home to a child.
“My husband and I worked both in the social worker field and me in the education field and We saw a need for foster parents in our area primarily because of the work that we do, and so we fostered for ten years — and during that time, we were able to adopt,” says Hatt.
In Aroostook County, there are about 220 children in foster care at any given time according to Hatt. That number can rise or fall, depending on family circumstances and community needs.
