VIRGINIA, USA — Social media scams are on the rise, and TikTok is emerging as a hotspot for fraud targeting Virginians, according to AARP Virginia.
The AARP Fraud Watch Network says scammers are turning more to social media platforms like TikTok and Facebook Marketplace to steal money. Many of these scams are familiar with a social media spin, often involving scammers posing as celebrities, influencers, or friends to request money, solicit donations, or promote fake investments, often tied to cryptocurrency.
AARP Virginia offers these tips to help protect yourself:
Check your privacy settings: Limit who can see your posts and which apps can access your information.
Be skeptical of direct messages: Red flags include friendly conversations that shift toward mentorship, romance, or invest
