NORFOLK, Va. — A Hampton woman is sharing her story after she said her husband suffered serious complications after a medical emergency.

Janet Potter-Cook told 13News Now it was "a 27-day hospital nightmare." She said her husband, Carlton Cook, was a bright and happy-go-lucky father of three. Now, he may never again leave his hospital bed.

In late September, Cook came down with what he thought was the flu. After an initial visit to the doctor and a clinic, he seemed fine.

But the next morning, his face became extremely swollen, and he was brought to the ER in Hampton, where his wife said doctors discovered a rare flesh-eating bacterium through his nose and in his neck.

“What am I going to tell my kids, what am I going to tell my family?" said Potter-Cook.
