Walter Lakeberg was a low-profile forestry executive in the 1950s and ’60s. The only time he made the paper was when he got married and a tree fell on his house in a windstorm.

But in the 1950s, he commissioned one of the most stylish mid-century modern homes ever built in Vancouver.

Tucked away in a cul-de-sac where Kerrisdale meets the Southlands, the 4,400-sq.-ft. house has a sunken living room, a giant rec room with a tiki bar, and a kidney-shaped pool in the backyard.

The elegant Roman brick fireplaces in the living room, den and rec room go from the floor to the ceiling, echoing the home’s large windows. Exotic woods such as mahogany and teak seem to be everywhere. The floor in the rec room is terrazzo, normally used in commercial buildings.
