The First World War famously ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
But the armistice halting hostilities between Germany and the Allied Forces was actually signed six hours earlier, at 5 a.m.
According to the U.S. World War One Centennial Commission, the delay was deadly: there were “10,944 casualties, including 2,738 deaths, on the war’s last day.”
The world was on edge through early November in 1918, as the Allies pressed forward and the German forces and government collapsed.
The first reports that the Great War was over circulated on Nov. 7, an event known as the “False Armistice.”
In North America, the news was sent out by United Press.
