The IVF industry warns the ACT government's plans to backflip on laws that left hundreds in fertility limbo will not "turn on a tap" of donor sperm and eggs.
The Assisted Reproductive Technology Act 2024 was passed in March last year, so children conceived via donor eggs or sperm, known collectively as gametes, could access information about the donor.
The ACT legislation went further than any other state by allowing parents to access identifying information about donors from the child's birth. A child could also get those records from age 12 at the earliest.
Canberra's three fertility providers said these unexpected additions halted an already limited supply of donor eggs and sperm. The government estimated it impacted hundreds of Canberrans.
