WESTLAKE, Ohio – Officers responded to a call about a car off the road at 7:15 p.m. on Oct. 26 near Canterbury Road and First Street.

Witnesses said the car had struck a rock on a tree lawn, and the male driver was OK but was slurring his words, according to a police department press release.

When officers asked the driver what had happened, the 36-year-old Lakewood man could not explain his driving and did not seem to understand the question. As he was directed to a nearby sidewalk for field sobriety tests, the man lost his balance, and officers had to stabilize him, according to a department statement. Reports note that the man put his cell phone to his ear and told whomever was on the line that he was going to jail.
