LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Major cargo operators immediately grounded their fleets of MD-11 aircraft Saturday following a safety recommendation from Boeing, affecting approximately 70 planes worldwide.
UPS and FedEx suspended MD-11 operations after Boeing's Safety Review Board determined that additional engineering analysis was necessary. The move comes days after a UPS cargo plane crashed in Louisville and killed at least 14 people .
"With safety as our top priority, we recommended to the three operators of the MD-11 Freighter that they suspend flight operations while additional engineering analysis is performed," Boeing stated.
The grounding hits a significant portion of carrier fleets. UPS said MD-11s comprise approximately 9% of its airline fleet, while FedEx currently operates 28 MD-11s o
