A ballroom... An arch... The Oval Office... Now a stadium?
President Donald Trump is reportedly pushing for the Washington Commanders' new $3.8 billion stadium to be named after him, according to multiple reports.
Earlier this year, the DC City Council voted to give final approval to build a 65,000-seat stadium at the old RFK Stadium site, which also calls for a mixed-use development project in the surrounding neighborhoods, as well as affordable housing in the area.
Trump reportedly now wants to put his name on another building, alongside a new name for the team — though he has vociferously argued on that front.
"A senior White House source said there have been back-channel communications with a member of the Commanders' ownership group, led by Josh Harris, to express Trump's desire to have the domed stadium in the nation's capital bear his name," ESPN reported.
Trump, who will be in attendance Sunday at Northwest Stadium when the Commanders take on the Detroit Lions in DC, has not commented publicly about the claims, though his administration is in favor of it.
"That would surely be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, according to FOX.
The stadium is scheduled to open in time for the 2030 season. The Commanders will continue to play their home games at Northwest Stadium (formerly FedEx Field) in Landover until then.
No comments have been made by the Commanders' organization.
According to the ESPN report, if Trump wants his name on the stadium, "he has plenty of leverage" to make it happen.
"He has cards to play. He can make it very difficult, through government environmental approvals and other things, to make sure everyone who wants this stadium to be built will join to put his name on it," the report states. "Trump has plenty of cards to play to get his way."
"The source with knowledge of Trump's wishes said the president doesn't want to buy the name or have a deep-pocketed corporate sponsor buy the name for him. He wants the Commanders' stadium to be named after him, similar to Lambeau Field, as a tribute or thank you for his work to get it approved, sources said."
While the commander-in-chief continues to sit comfortably in the Oval Office amid a government shutdown, it remains to be seen if he plans to add the Commanders' gold and maroon to his collection.
