Plenty of great TV shows have originated from the British Isles . There are comedy classics like Only Fools and Horses and I'm Alan Partridge , mysterious thrillers such as The Prisoner and Utopia , clever crime capers along the lines of Peaky Blinders and Luther , and, of course, Gladiators . Despite such success on the small screen, however, only one TV show can rightfully claim to be the true "best of British."

Strangely, it's a series that has stared death in the face almost as many times as its main character. Being canceled is, unfortunately, not a new phenomenon in the TV realm. A lucky few series are able to stave off an early ending through fan demand, or manage to resurrect themselves years after the fact. Even so, no TV show has defied the axe quite as often, or
