HOUSTON — A Houston businessman is making headlines on the cycling track, setting his fifth world record in sprint cycling in his age group. I joined him a the Velodrome to see what it takes to train.
Andy Weathers covered 500 meters in 32.365 seconds in September at a competition in Mexico, posting a time faster than cyclists 20 years younger. He competed in the 55-59 age bracket.
"The time that I set was the fastest time ridden by a masters athlete in history," Weathers said. "In history."
Weathers practices at the Alkek Velodrome in west Houston, the only cycling track in Texas. His top speed on the track? Weathers said he's reached "probably about 47-48 miles an hour."
"It's exhilarating, it's fantastic!" he said.
To demonstrate Weathers' speed, I agreed to race the world cham
