SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WMTV) - People in Sun Prairie had the chance to smash pumpkins for an environmental cause Saturday.
The event featured games of all kinds, including pumpkin bowling and a pumpkin piñata. The city hosted the event with the goal of keeping old jack-o-lanterns out of landfills.
The city is composting all of the broken pumpkin pieces from the event. Sun Prairie’s sustainability program coordinator, Hannah Best, said composting pumpkins returns nutrients to the soil instead of producing harmful emissions.
“Food scraps or pumpkin scraps go back to the soil through this process so it kind of mitigates the depletion of our nutritious top soil that we need to continue growing food,” Best said.
Residents who missed Saturday’s event can drop off their pumpkins at the recyclin
