Shadow housing minister Andrew Bragg has warned he would resign from the frontbench if the Liberal Party abandoned the Paris Agreement.

However, Mr Bragg expressed confidence that such a move was unlikely and that the party would maintain its commitment to the agreement.

“I don’t imagine that we would ever leave Paris. We’re a party of government, right? We’re not a fringe party,” Mr Bragg told ABC’s Insiders program on Sunday.

“Well sure,” he added when pressed on whether he would quit if the party did abandon the climate accord.

The Paris Agreement, which Australia has signed up to, sets out that net zero should be achieved between 205 and 2100.

The Liberal Party has maintained a policy of achieving net zero by 2050 since 2021, under former prime minister Scott Morrison.
