HILLSBORO, Ore. — Emotional testimony from a Hillsboro teenager who spoke about his fears over the safety of his family and neighbors underscored the community's plea for leaders to do more to protect immigrants.
"We are getting treated like animals because people are judge us by the color of our skin and the way that we talk," Manny Chavez said during a Tuesday city council meeting. "I'm scared for my parents to walk out there, to walk out their house, because I might not be able to say goodbye to them if they go to work."
Manny said that he didn't even plan to speak out that night, but he was moved by others who spoke before him.
