Five people were hospitalized and seven were rescued after an overnight fire tore through a Green Street home in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, officials announced on Saturday, Nov. 8.

The fire broke out around 4:28 a.m. inside a multi-story home on the 2000 block of Green Street, Harrisburg Fire Chief Brian Enterline said. Crews arrived to find heavy flames and smoke pouring from the second floor, with several people trapped on the roof.

Firefighters rescued two individuals from the front porch and helped another person exit the first floor, according to officials. Those who had climbed onto the roof had reportedly tried to extinguish the fire themselves before being forced upward by the heat.

Enterline confirmed the fire started in a second-floor bedroom due to an overloaded electrical outlet or extension cord. “It’s important to remember, when we have these extension cords, they’re not meant for permanent wiring and you can’t run a lot of stuff through those,” he said.

The blaze was contained to the second and third floors, though all levels of the home suffered water damage. No children or pets were inside at the time, and all five hospitalized residents are expected to recover from non-life-threatening injuries, Enterline said.

The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the fire.
