MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — A teacher is behind bars after allegedly assaulting a student during school.

Nathan Hansen, 52, was arrested for aggravated assault after an incident at American Leadership Academy on Friday.

Police say just after 3 p.m., they responded to the school for reports that Hansen was allegedly involved in an altercation with a 14-year-old boy during physical education class.

According to initial reports, the student allegedly approached Hansen and tried to take a phone from his hand. Police say surveillance video showed Hansen shoving the student to the ground, grabbing him by the back of his hoodie, and dragging him off the basketball court before sliding him against the bleachers.

The student suffered minor injuries but is expected to be OK.
