ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (KWCH) - A Vietnam veteran in Arkansas City is getting the recognition he’s deserved for decades.
At the annual Arkansas City Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, the American Legion specifically honored Clifford Gottlob. Gottlob served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War.
During Gottlob’s final tour, his aircraft was struck by heavy automatic fire, causing him to suffer a severe head injury.
“In ‘64, I got shot down over Laos, and I was able to get the plane, a miracle, to get that plane to safety, to stay together, so I could land it on an air force base,” Gottlob said.
Gottlob was treated and returned to Germany. Weeks later, he was given an Honorable Discharge with no mention of his Vietnam service. This meant that there weren’t records of him serving until those wi
