STONE COUNTY, Miss. (WLOX) - For more than 200 years, women have served in some capacity in the military, even at times when it wasn’t allowed.
In 1990, Jocelyn Willis joined the U.S. Navy. She says even then, things weren’t perfect.
“Although it was 1990, it was still different, and women still had a long way to go. So I had a lot of adjusting to do, but I was determined not to return and finish what I started,” Willis said. “It got better and better. We’re still having some of our first women to do this and our first woman to do that, but we are still learning, America’s young,”
Willis joined at 17, just months after high school graduation. She’s one of more than 15 women honored on Saturday for breaking barriers.
