GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Thousands of veterans and their loved ones walked along the Fox River in Green Bay on Saturday as part of an event to raise awareness about the issue of suicide among those who serve.
17.6.
That’s the number of miles it took to complete the long course for H.O.O.A.H. Wisconsin’s third largest fundraiser, the “Veterans Suicide Awareness March”.
It’s also the same number of veterans on average who take their lives each day.
Dakota Waalkens, a retired Marine, walked to support his friend while looking to build connections.
“He sent me this when I tried to take my life a while ago. And he wears one too. And on the inside it says, I’m a child of God,” says Waalkens.
Inside the venue and around the course, there are 67 boots with a picture and a story of a veteran
