NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Volunteers across Connecticut are rolling up their sleeves this Veterans Day Weekend to give back to those who served our country.

In New Britain, crews with House of Heroes Connecticut spent Saturday working on a home for one local veteran, part of a record-breaking year for the nonprofit organization.

At 72 years old, U.S. Air Force veteran Mark Chesanek has spent years serving others but now he’s the one getting a helping hand.

“I’m overwhelmed, I really am,” Chesanek said. “If you can’t tell, I’m on the verge of breaking out in tears.”

Chesanek enlisted in the Air Force in 1972 after learning his draft number was three. He went on to serve four years, operating power plants that kept military bases running. After an honorable discharge, he built a successful
