MADISON (WKOW) – A new bar on Madison's east side is making its debut with a mission to celebrate athletes who don't always get the spotlight. Bernell's Sports Bar & Lounge opened its doors, packed with music and energy, but behind the celebration lies a deeper story of representation, community, and love for women's sports.

"I knew it was going to be large today, so I'm not surprised, but I'm grateful, completely grateful, humbled by the whole thing," said owner Rita Adair.

Adair was inspired to open the bar by her late wife, who shared her passion for women's sports.

"It was a vision of hers that maybe she'd be able to one day own a bar that would have the visibility for women's sports. And she passed, unfortunately, so I decided to do this in her honor," said Adair.
