MANCHESTER — There were still 7 minutes left when Winnacunnet’s Sophia Guimaraes stepped up for a penalty kick in the Division I girls soccer state championship on Saturday, Nov. 8 at Manchester Memorial High School.
Eighth-seeded Winnacunnet and second-seed Pinkerton Academy, in a rematch of last year’s championship game, were tied 1-1 with 7:12 left on the clock when the Astros were called for a foul in front of the goal.
Despite with more than 7 minutes left, Winnacunnet head coach Nick O’Brien and Guimaraes’ teammates strongly believed the go-ahead goal – and ultimately the program’s first state title in 42 years – would soon be theirs.
