OpenAI is facing a series of lawsuits alleging that its artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, contributed to multiple deaths by suicide and several severe mental health crises. Four wrongful death suits and three additional cases were filed Thursday in California state courts, accusing the company of releasing a “defective and inherently dangerous" product.
The complaints, filed by families and individuals from across the United States and Canada, claim that ChatGPT’s conversations worsened users’ mental health, encouraged self-harm, or induced delusional episodes. The suits were filed jointly by the Tech Justice Law Project and the Social Media Victims Law Center.
