An intoxicated Brick Township man with a history of driving offenses has been charged in connection with a crash that seriously injured a 15-year-old boy riding an electric bicycle Saturday, Nov. 8, authorities said.
William Donohoe, 43, was heading north on Midstreams Place in a Nissan Rogue when he made a left turn onto Midstreams Road and struck an electric bicycle being ridden by a 15-year-old male just before 11 p.m., Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.
Donohoe failed to stop and continued west on Midstreams Road. The teen was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he remains hospitalized in stable condition, Billhimer said.
As officers were rendering aid, they saw Donohoe walking toward the crash scene. Investigators later determined that Donohoe was the driver who struck the teen and left the scene, Billhimer said.
Officers noted that Donohoe appeared to be intoxicated and attempted to administer field sobriety tests, which he was unable to perform successfully. He was charged with Driving Under the Influence and placed under arrest, according to the prosecutor.
Donohoe was taken to Ocean University Medical Center in Brick Township, where police obtained a court-authorized blood draw. The results are pending, Billhimer said.
Donohoe was charged with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Crash Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury and Assault by Auto, authorities said. He was lodged in the Ocean County Jail, pending a detention hearing.
Court records show that Donohoe was charged on Nov. 8, 2019, with unsafe operation of a vehicle, driving or parking an unregistered motor vehicle, driving after his license or registration was suspended or revoked, driving with an expired license, and failing to produce a driver’s insurance card.
He was also charged on July 31, 2019, with using a handheld wireless telephone while driving, and on June 24, 2019, with an overtime parking violation.
In 2018, records show that Donohoe was charged on Dec. 2 with driving while his license was suspended and failure to return or surrender a suspended or revoked driver’s license or registration.
He was charged on Aug. 22, 2018, with a metered parking display-of-receipt violation, and on July 9, 2018, with speeding, improper display or unclear license plates, and failure to produce a driver’s license.
Records also show that he was charged on June 5, 2018, with failure to produce a driver’s insurance card.
