Minnesotans began receiving SNAP benefits again this weekend after an ongoing government shutdown put the funding in limbo.
The USDA suspended payments for Americans receiving money from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program at the beginning of the month, citing insufficient funds due to the ongoing government shutdown, which is now the longest in U.S. history.
In response to the program’s suspension, 23 attorneys general and three governors from across the country sued the Trump administration, arguing that the USDA had SNAP-specific contingency funds appropriated by Congress that should be used amid the shutdown.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is among those involved in the lawsuit.
