As we retrieve towels from our cupboards expecting them to be fresh and ready for use, we're often left deflated when the fabric starts emitting a distinctly unpleasant odour.
Whilst this can merely indicate that our towels require another wash, in certain cases, foul smells can emerge within minutes or hours after a towel has completed a washing machine cycle.
As the Daily Telegraph's Lilith Hudson recently outlined, one of the primary reasons a freshly laundered towel can rapidly develop an offensive odour stems from detergent not being properly rinsed from the fabric.
She clarifies that when we don't thoroughly rinse out detergent, "it can create a greasy film that traps sweat and oils in fibres, resulting in a musty smell."
