The New York Giants looked poised to pull off a huge road upset on Sunday against the Bears, but the game fell apart for Brian Daboll's squad the moment Jaxson Dart went down with an injury.

With the Giants up 10 points late in the third quarter, the rookie quarterback took off on what would have been a first-down run. But at the end of the scramble, he lost the ball and slammed his head hard into the turf.

The Bears recovered the fumble, and Dart ultimately needed to head to the locker room. He was eventually ruled out with a concussion as Chicago rallied to win, 24-20.

How long will Dart be out?

Now that Dart has been diagnosed with a concussion, he will enter the league's concussion protocol. Via the NFL:

Every NFL player diagnosed with a concussion must follow a five-step process before being cleared to fully practice or participate in an NFL game. This process, developed from internationally accepted guidelines, ensures that each player receives consistent treatment.

Each player and each concussion is unique, and there is no set time-frame for return to participation. Team medical staff consider the player's current concussive injury, as well as past exposures and medical history, family history and future risk in managing a player's care.

Dart's progression through that protocol is totally dependent on how long his symptoms persist and his ability to clear the testing. The Giants play next Sunday against the Packers, and Dart's availability will almost certainly be in jeopardy.

If Dart can't go on Week 11, Russell Wilson would take back over as Giants quarterback.
