A hunting trip turned into a dramatic rescue after a man fell about 15 feet from a tree stand deep inside Greenridge State Forest in Allegany County, officials said.

The incident was reported around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, when emergency crews were called to the remote area for reports of an injured hunter.

Due to the man’s location and the extent of his injuries, a Maryland State Police helicopter crew was called in to perform an aerial hoist rescue.

First responders on the ground provided care and helped package the victim as a rescue technician was lowered into a small clearing among the trees.

Video of the rescue can be found here.

The pilot hovered roughly 125 feet above the forest canopy while the victim was lifted into the aircraft.

Once safely inside, the crew flew the man directly to UPMC Western Maryland for treatment.

“This was a fantastic job by responding personnel to utilize their skills and get this patient to definitive care as quickly as possible,” police said.

The Flintstone Volunteer Fire Department assisted and captured video of the rescue.
