Michigan State's women's soccer team came so close to winning the Big Ten tournament championship that still eludes the Spartans. But, after 110 minutes of play, during which 2-seed MSU controlled more of the game than top-seed Washington but only had a 1-1 tie to show for it, the Huskies beat the Spartans in a penalty shootout to grab the title.
Washington goalkeeper Tanner Ijams stopped MSU's first and third attempts in the shootout, while the Huskies shooters went a perfect 4 for 4 from the 12-yard spot.
Washington was playing with heavy hearts, just days after the death of their former goalkeeper, Mia Hamant, who died Nov. 7 at the age of 21 after a battle with a rare form of kidney cancer. Hamant had been the Huskies' starter last season and one of the nation's best goalkeepers stat
