SWANVILLE, Maine — A group based in Belfast spent the day learning about the continental glaciers that spread across Maine long ago.

"The glacier came through here 10,000 years ago,” retired geologist Chris Mattson said to the group.

The Laurentide ice sheet covered nearly all of the state during the last ice age, exposing underlying bedrock known as granite.

"The glacier left them behind by scouring the tops of these ridges,” Mattson said to the group.

Mattson traveled all around the world, from Greenland to Canada, searching for and finding valuable materials like metals and diamonds.

"The geology is pretty intriguing,” Mattson said.
