The U.S. Senate voted Sunday to advance a measure that would reopen the federal government following the longest shutdown in its history, but did so without a firm deal on healthcare subsidies that Democrats had been fighting for.
The vote passed 60-40 after eight Democrats senators joined all 52 Republican senators to vote in favor of the spending agreement, which will now advance to the U.S. House for deliberation.
Sixty votes are needed to overcome the filibuster and pass a continuing resolution in the Senate, so Republicans needed eight Democrats to vote in favor.
But Democrats had refused to pass a CR until Republicans agreed to extend Biden-era healthcare subsidies that will limit the impact of skyrocketing insurance premiums in 2026, which are due to expire at the end of this yea
