HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Amid calls from President Donald Trump’s administration to cancel food assistance , Hawaii lawmakers and leaders vowed recipients will still get SNAP payments.
While volunteering at a food drive at Leeward Community College on Sunday, Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke said the state will not claw back SNAP benefits recipients were already paid for November, as ordered by the Trump administration.
“There are so many uncertainties and even the number of cars that are coming through, it’s really heartbreaking,” Luke mentioned, referencing the long lines at the distribution.
Luke added the federal government has said states who do not retrieve deposits will be responsible for the money.
