Detectives from the homicide squad are investigating the death of a one-year-old boy in the regional Victorian city of Ballarat last week.

Victoria Police today said the boy became unresponsive about 12pm on November 4 while at home in the suburb of Sebastopol, and was taken to hospital by his 26-year-old mother and her 18-year-old partner.

The child died two days later in a Melbourne hospital.

Detectives from the homicide squad and the Ballarat child abuse and sexual assault investigation team are investigating the exact circumstances leading up to the child's death and have spoken with the two adults.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
