Dispur/Hyderabad, Nov 10 (Maxim News): The Assam government has taken a historic step by passing a new law banning polygamy in the state. The proposed legislation — “Assam Polygamy Prohibition Bill, 2025” — will be introduced in the State Assembly on November 25 . Once enacted, the law will make it illegal for a man to have more than one wife at a time .

The bill proposes severe penalties for those found violating the law. Under the new provisions, polygamy will be treated as a criminal offense , and individuals marrying another person without obtaining a legal divorce or annulment of their previous marriage can face up to seven years of imprisonment .
