LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The Lincoln Police Department is investigating after a man took his own life while in police custody.
Just before 8 p.m. Sunday evening, LPD says officers responded to a call of a man having a mental health crisis at a home near 54th and Meredeth streets, in southeast Lincoln.
When they arrived, officers say they found a man in his 40s trying to get into the home through a basement window. The man was taken into custody and searched by officers before he was seated in the back of a police cruiser, according to LPD.
While officers were interviewing witnesses, LPD says the man shot himself with a gun that he had in his possession. They say he was able to move his hands to the front of his body and pull the gun from inside his pants.
