Brits with a National Insurance number have been issued a warning by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). In an update, the Government department told people to “only share it when you need to”.

This unique number could be exploited for identity theft and fraudulent activities, including illegally claiming benefits or securing loans. On social media platform X, HMRC said: “Download the HMRC app to view your National Insurance number.
