With Christmas fast approaching, household bills climbing and inflation showing little sign of easing , many people are keen to hang on to every pound they can.

One simple way to boost your balance – and even make some extra cash – is by switching bank accounts.

Several banks are currently offering switching bonuses worth hundreds of pounds, while others tempt new customers with rewards such as free cinema tickets, cashback, or, for students , interest-free overdrafts.

This week, Santander has “blown the competition out of the water”, Kate Steere, money expert at comparison site Finder, said, with a new £200 switching deal.

But is it really the best offer available right now? Some banks offer even more – though only to certain customers.
